The 2022 World Cup draw takes place this Friday

More than four months after winning their ticket for the 2022 World Cup, the French team will meet their opponents in the first round today. The draw for the group stage (eight groups of four teams) of the World Cup takes place this Friday at 6 p.m. (French time), Doha.

29 out of 32 qualified are known

The 32 qualified teams are divided into four hats according to the FIFA ranking published on March 31. There are, however, a few exceptions. As host country, Qatar invites itself into pot 1, that of the top seeds. And the last three teams not yet qualified are automatically assigned to pot 4, regardless of their FIFA ranking.

As a reminder, three teams still have to validate their ticket for Qatar: the winner of the last European play-off (Wales or Ukraine or Scotland) and the two winners of the intercontinental play-offs (Prou or United Arab Emirates or Australia; Costa Rica or New Zealand). France could therefore not be totally fixed on the identity of its future adversaries this evening.

The worst and the best draw for France

As seeded, France will be present in pot 1. The Blues are thus guaranteed to avoid Brazil, Belgium, Argentina, England, Spain, Portugal and Qatar, all present in that hat. On the other hand, the Didier Deschamps band can inherit in hat 2 from the Netherlands, Denmark or Switzerland, its executioner during the last Euro, but especially from Germany! Despite their 1-0 success in the group stage of the Euro, the Habs would probably prefer not to face the Mannschaft in the first round. The Germans dominated their group in qualifying (9 wins, 1 loss) and act as favourites.

In hat 3, Senegal, African champions, would be a serious opponent. This confrontation would recall that of the 2002 World Cup, which had turned in favor of the Lions of Teranga (1-0) against the French world champions. Hat 4 is more uncertain but Equateur, 4th in the Amsud zone, would offer tough opposition. A group with Germany, Senegal and Ecuador would therefore look like a bad draw for the Blues. On the other hand, a pool made up of the United States, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia would undoubtedly be the most affordable draw. Will Didier Deschamps’ team be lucky? Answer tonight.

The composition of the hats:

Hat 1: Brazil, Belgium, FRANCEArgentina, England, Spain, Portugal, Qatar

Hat 2: Mexico, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Uruguay, Switzerland, United States, Croatia

Hat 3: Senegal, Iran, Japan, Morocco, Serbia, Poland, South Korea, Tunisia

Hat 4: Wales or Ukraine or Scotland, Saudi Arabia, Ghana, Cameroon, Ecuador, Canada, Peru or United Arab Emirates or Australia, Costa Rica or New Zealand
