ArtWeaver is a free raster (bitmap) graphics editor for amateur and professional artists. It’s especially useful if you’re familiar with programs like Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter.

Although it is free, ArtWeaver is very powerful. It is compatible with graphic tablets, pressure sensitivity, etc. It allows you to use layers, transparencies, gradients, realistic brushes… It allows you to simulate oil, acrylic, pastel, pencil, airbrush brushes…

A curiosity of Artweaver is that it allows several people to work on the same document at the same time. That is, several people connect to the document over the internet, and they can all paint at the same time. For example, one is working on the background while another is working on the foreground. This can be fun to draw with friends.

ArtWeaver is compatible with graphic tablets, recognizes pressure sensitivity, etc. It works on Windows and Linux (I don’t think it’s for Mac, but if you know of a version that works on Mac, let me know in the comments).

ArtWeaver comes in two versions, a free version and an “ArtWeaver Plus” version, which costs little (around €25) and gives you more advanced tools, compatibility with Photoshop filters, the ability to work with larger images, etc.
