To avoid this situation, it is better to privilege as much as possible the connection via the Wireless. This recommendation is particularly valid when you are abroad and want to be able to continue using WhatsApp free. Indeed, the use of the cellular network in roaming is generally not included in the data plan and involves an additional cost which can be very significant. To be sure not to risk such a scenario, disable data roaming and only use a Wi-Fi connection. This also works for browsing Internet and use an online service.
Disable Data Roaming Abroad on Android
On Android 2.1 and 2.3, successively open the menus Settings, Wireless and Networks then Mobile networks. Disable the option Data roaming ;
On android 4.0 and later, successively open the menus Settings, More (under Wireless and Networks), Mobiles or Cellular Networks. Disable the option Data roaming ;
If you use a Custom Android ROMs (for example CyanogenMod), go to the settings of your smart phone then look for the menu Mobile networks where you can disable the option Data roaming.
Disable Data Roaming Abroad on iPhone
On iOSsuccessively open the menus iPhone Settings, General, Cellular network and disable the option Data abroad. Once abroad, log in to WhatsApp via Wi-Fi connection.
If you happen to need to use WhatsApp abroad over a cellular connection, you can reduce data consumption by blocking automatic downloading of media:
- Go to the settings of theapplication then successively click on Chats and calls then Download media car ;
- In the section Roaminguncheck all boxes Pictures, Audio and Videos then press okay.
Remark : If you use a SIM card to connect to the cellular network of the country you are in, then you can use the function Change Number to migrate your account to your new number. In WhatsApp, this option is in the app settings under My account.
